El Sistema USA presents our November Webinar, "Teaching Artistry in Sistema Teaching" with acclaimed author and Music Educator, Tricia Tunstall.

Webinar Focus:

Teachers and leaders of El Sistema- inspired programs often experience a crucial paradox at the heart of the work:  a tension between artistic ambition and social/emotional goals.

The two goals can often seem to be at odds.  How can you have true artistic excellence when you are accommodating the social goals of inclusion, equity, and social justice?

The answer, says Tricia Tunstall, often lies in the practices of teaching artistry.  It’s in the intersection of teaching artist skills and philosophy with El Sistema learning environments that the crucial work of social transformation through artistic ambition can occur.

Explore this intersection in an interactive webinar with Tunstall, a writer, speaker, consultant and music educator whose books Changing Lives (2012) and Playing for Their Lives (2016; co-written with Eric Booth) distill the findings of a decade of studying and writing about El Sistema in Venezuela and around the world.  Tunstall will identify and discuss eight distinctive and specific key teaching artist practices through which Sistema T.A.s successfully combine the pursuit of social transformation with the pursuit of artistic excellence.
